How to record an observation
What it's for
An observation captures something you noticed about a child — a skill they showed, a moment of progress — and ties it to a developmental milestone. Observations are the building blocks of each child's development record.
Where to find it
Observations (under Learning and Development)
Step-by-step
- Go to Observations.
- In the Record Observation panel, choose the child.
- Pick a mode:
- From Library — choose a framework, then drill down through **domain →
sub-domain → milestone** to tie the observation to a specific skill.
- Freeform — write your own observation without linking it to a milestone.
- Set the mastery level — Not Yet, Emerging, Developing or Achieved.
- Set the date observed and add notes.
- Tick Visible to parents if you want families to see it.
- Click Record Observation.
Tips & limits
- Library observations feed the child's Development progress; freeform ones are a
quick note when nothing in the library fits.
- Everything you record appears in the Observation History below, which you can
filter by domain, date range and teacher.
- Only observations marked Visible to parents appear in the family portal.
